Station IV: Welfare Services

Welfare relief services provided by the West Berlin Senate occupied the fourth station in the reception procedure. Employees distributed meal vouchers and free local rail tickets to the refugees. They assisted refugees in acquiring clothing and other basic consumer goods, and they clarified whether applicants were entitled to social benefits and assigned refugees housing (the Marienfelde Refugee Center was often cram-full until the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961; for this reason, many refugees were assigned to residential accommodation in different parts of the city). The city’s welfare agencies were assisted in their efforts by the many charitable organisations active at Marienfelde.
