Station XI: Transfer to West Germany

As soon as the refugee’s application was approved, authorities prepared to transfer the new citizen to West Germany. Each West German province agreed to accept a certain number of East German immigrants, based on its size, population and economic strength. The director of the application process, together with representatives from the federal states, decided to which federal state the newcomer would be allocated. Where possible, the wishes of the refugees were taken into account.
