Weihnachten W. Germany - DDR-Flucht und Neuanfang

Christmas is valid as a celebration of the family as well as the being together. It is connected with feelings of affiliation, security and home. The GDR refugees had to leave behind a lot. On these holidays they were confronted with deprivation in different facets.

With look at Christmas the special exhibition showed with the help of single destinies from the time of the building of the Berlin Wall the way of GDR refugees in their newhome: the leaving from the close surroundings and leaving behind of family, friends and possession; the celebration of Christmas in refugee centers, in an interim solution, without privacy and apart from members of the family; and, finally, the arrival in the new life, in the new home country which is symbolised by the first own pieces of furniture and „four walls“. Besides, the souvenirs of the refugee's family Nieske stood in the center of the special exhibition.
