Sewing Machine

This sewing machine was among the most important belongings that Mrs. Z brought with her when she fled from Stralsund in September 1953. Together with her mother and two children, who were eight and ten years old at the time, she carried the 16kg sewing machine first to the Marienfelde refugee center, then from one temporary shelter to another. After more than two years of living in these shelters, the family finally settled near Hamburg in 1956. They saved money in those difficult first years by sewing new clothes and reworking old ones. Later on the sewing machine continued to be of service - Mrs. Z used it until she passed away in 1992.
