In a ceremony held on 14 April 2005, Federal Minister of State for Culture, Dr. Christina Weiss, together with Berlin Senator, Dr. Thomas Flierl, opened the museum’s new permanent exhibition “Flight in Divided Germany.” The new exhibition replaced the initial exhibition first put in place by the Association in 1993. A team of historians, working closely with contemporary eyewitnesses and the Association, completed the work in a year and a half. The new exhibition was made possible with the financial support of the German State Lottery Foundation, Berlin (Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie), the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien) and the Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship (Stiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur). In addition, donations, as well as generous loans and gifts of objects, were very helpful in setting up the exhibition.

The date of the exhibit opening is one of considerable importance to Marienfelde: fifty-two years earlier, on 14 April 1953, the-then German President, Theodor Heuss, inaugurated the refugee Center for East Germans.
