On 25 November 2005, a monument was unveiled in front of the museum’s main Building. The monument is the initiative of the Association. Model for sculptor Marco Flierl’s cast-bronze monument was the suitcase with which Mr. and Mrs. Dubrow arrived at Marienfelde in January 1957 after their successful escape from East Germany. Their suitcase symbolically represents the roughly four million people who left East Germany for the West between 1949 and 1990.

At the unveiling, in addition to Hans-Dieter Dubrow, several other individuals lent a hand: the chair of the Association, Harald Fiss, the deputy district major, Dieter Hapel, and the President of the Berlin House of Representative Walter Momper.
