Station IX: X-Ray Office
While waiting for their hearing, the refugees were x-rayed. The main purpose of the x-ray examination was to determine cases of tuberculous (TB) – until the beginning of the 1960s, cases of this infectious disease were more common at the refugee Center than in the population at large.
The health offices of West Berlin municipal districts bore responsibility for the examination. In cases where TB was suspected, those affected were admitted to the chest clinic in Berlin-Heckeshorn; their cases were held in abeyance during their hospital stay.
Next station: Emergency Reception Panel
