Education

The former Marienfelde Refugee Centre is a memorial site. It is also a place of learning, reflection and discussion. We offer a diverse program to school and youth groups. This program extends from an escorted tour of the permanent exhibition to activity-oriented project work lasting several hours.

Our authentic site and permanent exhibition invites pupils to actively engage history. Our broad spectrum of themes and materials introduces manifold conceptual and methodological entry points to Germany’s history from 1945 to 1990, connecting this history to today’s concerns.

  • At Marienfelde, the post-war conflict between East and West becomes tangible, in both its inner-German and international dimensions.
  • The story of flight and emigration described at Marienfelde makes clear that the histories of East and West Germany cannot merely be regarded side by side. Rather, the histories of the two post-war German states are bound up with one another.
  • Studying the story of flight and emigration told at Marienfelde makes abundantly clear the significance of such fundamental rights as free elections, freedom of opinion and the freedom of movement, both for society at large and for society’s individual members.
  • The former refugee camp is a place where understanding of the origins, course and problems of today’s migration movements may be promoted.
